چکیده

The spatial signatures of retrograde spanwise vortices in wall turbulence are assessed from particle-image velocimetry measurements in the streamwise–wall-normal plane of a zero-pressure-gradient turbulent boundary layer at Reτ ≡ u∗δ/ν=2350. The present results suggest that a proportion of retrograde spanwise vortices have a welldefined spatial relationship with neighbouring prograde vortices. Two-point crosscorrelations and conditionally averaged velocity fields given a retrograde vortex reveal that such structures are typically oriented either upstream of and below or downstream of and above a prograde core. While these pairings are consistent with the typical-eddy patterns reported by Falco and co-workers, we offer an alternative interpretation for a proportion of these retrograde/prograde pairs. In particular, the arrangement of a retrograde spanwise vortex upstream of and below a prograde core is also consistent with the spatial signature revealed if an omega-shaped hairpin structure were sliced through its shoulder region by a fixed streamwise–wall-normal measurement plane.

Statistical and structural similarities between micro- and macroscale wall turbulence

Microscopic particle-image velocimetry (microPIV) measurements are made in the streamwise–wallnormal plane of a 536 lm capillary at Re = 4,500 to study the statistical and structural features of wall turbulence at the microscale. Single-point velocity statistics, including the mean velocity profile, the root-mean-square streamwise and wall-normal velocities, and the Reynolds shear stress profil...

Turbulent Drag Reduction by Spanwise Wall Oscillations

The objective of this paper is to examine the effectiveness of wall oscillation as a control scheme of drag reduction. Two flow configurations are considered: constant flow rate and constant mean pressure gradient. The Navier-Stokes equations are solved using Fourier-Chebyshev spectral methods and the oscillation in sinusoidal form is enforced on the walls through boundary conditions for the sp...

The evolution of co-rotating vortices in a canonical boundary layer with inclined jets

The evolution of co-rotating streamwise vortices in a canonical flat plate turbulent boundary layer ~thickness of the boundary layer d0.99525 mm) is studied. The vortices are produced by an array of inclined jets ~diameter D514 mm) with the same orientation ~skew angle b and pitch angle a of 45°!. The focus of the investigation is on the immediate vicinity of the jet exit and downstream locatio...

Temporal analysis of coherent structures in a turbulent BFS flow with PIV

The phenomenon of flow separation and reattachment over a backward facing step geometry is investigated in the turbulent regime (Reh = 5000) by means of particle image velocimetry (PIV). The arrangement of the water flow facility with controlled fluid temperature allows achieving a field sampling frequency twice the convective reference frequency, which is satisfactory for the large-scale fluct...
